Each year more
than 80% of those who die in boating accidents drown because they were
not wearing life jackets. That means, that each year hundreds of lives
could have been saved by simply wearing PFD's (personal floatation devices).
Life jackets
really do save lives, but they won't work if you don't wear them.
Children are so fast, that even when being closely supervised, they can
be overboard in a moment. Make sure they are wearing a properly
fitted life jacket at all times while boating. This simple act of
love can make for a fun day on the water.
Boating safety
also mean operating your boat at a safe speed, at a safe distance
from the shore and other boats, and in a responsible manner. Keep
a good lookout for other boaters and know the rules of the road!
There are many
boating safety courses available around the country. The United
States Power Squadron, organized in 1914, is the worlds largest non profit
boating organization dedicated to making boating safer and more enjoyable.
The USPS teaches classes in seamanship, navigation, weather and other
related subjects. Check out www.usps.com
for classes near you.
Many lakefront
homeowners believe that considering 3/4's of the earth's surface
is covered with water, it means that we should be boating 75% of the time
and working 25% of the time!
